Ultra-processed foods, which are low in nutrition and high in calories, make up 57% of adult diets in the United States. A study published in The BMJ on May 8, 2024, found that consuming these types of snacks, drinks, and ready meals is linked to a higher risk of death from any cause. The study, which looked at data from over 100,000 American participants, revealed that those who ate the most ultra-processed foods had a 4% higher risk of death. The researchers also noted that certain types of ultra-processed foods, especially those based on meat, poultry, and seafood, showed the strongest associations with mortality.
Some types of processed foods, like sugary drinks and processed meats, are linked to a higher risk of health issues. However, foods like whole grain breads, which are also considered processed, contain important nutrients like fiber, vitamins, and minerals. The study suggests that limiting certain processed foods in our diets could be beneficial for our long-term health. More research is needed to better understand the impact of these foods on our health.
